Artist Statement:
I take photographs because I want to remember and share my steps through life the places that pass me by as well as the people that play in them. I am fascinated by the way a photo can capture a moment in time and the possibility of capturing a feeling in time.
When I take a portrait my main focus is the person, capturing something real about my subject.
I give no pre-photo-session instructions as to what to wear or grooming or what to do. The background is usually a place that the subject spends lots of time in and for the most part has had a lot of input into what it looks like. In this day when everyone has a cell phone camera and is used to playing a part to the media of the masses, what I look for is the true character in my subject not the rehearsed smile or self made media persona.
The idea of capturing a genuine portrait has also translated well into the photos of structures,
as they cannot act a part, they can’t “clean up good” for the camera. They have no preconceived notions and therefore simply show their true character.
There might even be something captured that is a genuine remnant of that place or that person.
